8 year old boy sleeps through carjacking

An eight-year old boy was in his mother’s unattended car when it was stolen and driven 6km away … and he slept through it all.

The primary two student at SRJK Likas Chung Hwa was left in his mother’s car outside his school compound at 6am as she walked out to buy bread nearby. The suspect or suspects then took the car and drove it 6km from the school to Asia City in downtown Kota Kinabalu, before abandoning the car.

The boy’s 42-year old mother, identified as Chung, said she had left her son in the backseat of the car with the engine running. She had walked to a van selling bread parked within the school’s general parking area, only to turn around and discover her car and her son missing.

Police were alerted to the carjacking at 6.10am, after Chung had made a distress call. The car, and the boy, were spotted by passersby at around 7.30am. The car was parked in the Asia City area.

“It is lucky he slept through the ordeal, it could have been traumatic for the boy,” said Kota Kinabalu deputy police chief Supt M. Chandra, who was at the scene.

Supt Chandra said at the moment they could not establish if there were more than one person who stole the car. Witnesses are urged to assist in police investigations.

“We are checking if there were any CCTV footages available in Asia City,” he said, adding that police believed it was car theft attempt.
