AirAsia: We’ll move to KLIA2 when everything’s okay

AirAsia has reiterated its stand on moving to the new KLIA2 low-cost terminal, as its executive chairman Datuk Kamarudin Meranun says the airline will only move when “everything is okay”.

“I can confirm that we will move when everything is okay. Let’s not deliberate on that,” he told reporters when met on the sidelines of Talent Corporation’s Diversity and Inclusion session in Kuala Lumpur today.

On April 1, Deputy Transport Minister Datuk Abdul Aziz Kaprawi announced that the Low-Cost Carrier Terminal (LCCT), where AirAsia is currently operating, would be closed on May 9, one week after the opening of KLIA2.

In response to Aziz’s announcement, AirAsia said its operations would still be conducted out of the LCCT even after May 9.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak stepped into the fray and told AirAsia to move into KLIA2 as scheduled, although the government, and by extension Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad (MAHB), were prepared to hear the airline’s grievances and to discuss solutions to any of its problems over the transfer.

AirAsia is estimated to contribute about 80% of the new airport’s total traffic.
