Six ‘dangerous’ routes off-limits to double-decker buses

Following a spate of grisly bus accidents in Pahang, including one in which a British national was killed and another which saw an 11-month old baby seriously injured, the Transport Ministry has moved to indefinitely bar double-decker buses from using six routes which have been deemed too dangerous for them.

The routes are to Genting Highlands, Cameron Highlands, Fraser’s Hill, Bukit Larut, Bukit Tinggi, and Gunung Jerai.

Deputy Transport Minister Datuk Abdul Aziz Kaprawi said the indefinite ban will take effect on May 1.

“Services of double-decker buses using routes other than the six are not effected by this decision,” he said, according to a report by The Star Online. The government was still studying the suitability of double-decker buses for general use in Malaysia.

A British national was killed while 39 others, including two drivers, were injured when a double-decker tour bus fell into a ravine on April 20 at KM70 of the Kuantan-Segamat highway near Pekan, Pahang.

On April 14, three passengers, including an 11-month old baby were seriously injured when an express bus carrying 27 passengers was involved in an accident at KM116 of the East Coast Highway.

On April 13, a double-decker bus from Kuala Lumpur to Kota Bharu, Kelantan crashed at Km11, Jalan Bentong Raub, killing three passengers and injuring 10 others.
