Ipoh-born woman wins MasterChef UK with nasi lemak and wonton soup

Ipoh-born Catherine Chin Coombes wowed the judges of MasterChef UK with jazzed up interpretations of classic local dishes, nasi lemak and wonton soup, and walked away the winner. 

“The last time I felt such emotion was when my daughter was born,” Coombes said of her win. “Pure joy and pure bliss. That feels incredible. Epic!”

MasterChef UK judges John Torode and Gregg Wallace were effusive in their praise of  Coombes’s creations, calling them works of art. Torode went on to say that he could eat a tub of the sambal ikan bilis Coombes made to accompany her final-clinching nasi lemak. 

Coombes took to Twitter to express her jubilation at winning this year’s season:

 

 

And sure enough, she got a high-profile co-sign and note of congratulations from Twitter’s #1 Malaysian:
