KLIA2 cracks: Parliamentary Committee says “we told you so”

The head of Parliament’s Public Accounts Committee (PAC) hit back at critics of his committee’s scrutiny of KLIA2 developments by Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad (MAHB), following revelations that the new airport has a host of security flaws less than a month after its opening.

PAC chair Datuk Nur Jazlan Mohamed said that “many quarters” were upset when his committee hauled up MAHB to question the body over its handling of KLIA2 construction, and the PAC was accused of meddling in MAHB’s affairs.

“Now we see sinking. Where? At the aircraft parking bays? What do they have to say?” he asked at a press conference in Parliament yesterday, as reported by The Malay Mail Online

The PAC had previously took note of ongoing works by MAHB to rectify ground subsidence at the curtain runway outside the aircraft parking bays. The committee had also raised concerns over possible “ponding” next to the aircraft parking bays.

All these issues have been reported to be present at the new terminal, less than a month after it began operations, and despite the fact that KLIA2 received approval from the International Civial Aviation Organization (ICAO).

“This is why we call MAHB to explain the problems earlier on, but MAHB said it was AirAsia that is causing the delays, but AirAsia didn’t build the airport,” said Nur Jazlan, referring to the carrier’s hesitance to move into KLIA2 as scheduled by MAHB on May 2.

AirAsia, KLIA’s largest tenant and the driver of almost 80% of its projected passenger traffic, had expressed its reservations on the new airport’s safety  and security prior to its moving in on May 9.

MAHB has previously acknowledged that KLIA2 is located on unstable ground that may settle, and that the facility could require years of resulting upkeep.
