Haram! Cadbury chocolates found to have pig DNA; the internet explodes

Cadbury has a long history of satisfying Malaysia’s sweet tooth over the decades; its brand name is practically synonymous with chocolate among Malaysians of all races and religions. Yet the Malaysian Islamic Development Department (Jakim) has suspended with immediate effect the halal certification two of Cadbury’s chocolate products, as they’ve been found to contain pig DNA.

The two Cadbury chocolate products are Cadbury Dairy Milk Hazelnut bars (batch number 200813M01H I2 expiring Nov 13, 2014) and Cadbury Daiy Milk Roast Almond (batch number 221013N01R I1, expiring January 15 2015).

“Further and thorough investigation will be carried out to determine the actual cause of the contamination of the products,” The Rakyat Post reports Jakim director-general Datuk Othman Mustapha as saying on May 24.

Accoding to Othman, Jakim’s last check on Cadbury’s inventory on February 20 showed nothing out of order as far as halal certification was concerned.

ntv7 7Edition posted a new report on the recall on the Cadbury chocolate bars yesterday:

Apparently the recall process is moving along clumsily at best, with some retailers not yet pulling the offending chocolate bars from their shelves.

That a universally popular and well-liked product as chocolate bars could be declared haram, even in a limited batch, spurred Malaysians, especially Malaysian Muslims, into a frenzy online. Here are some of the more humourous reactions to the haram Cadbury news:
