Chocolategate: Malay-Muslim NGOs declare ‘jihad’ on Cadbury

Not content with slapping a RM100 million lawsuit against Cadbury, a coalition of 20 Malaysian Malay-Muslim NGOs have called for ‘jihad’ or holy struggle against the confectionery giant over its chocolate bars tainted with porcine DNA.

At a press conference in KL, the groups, which include headline-grabbing mainstays Pertubuhan Pribumi Perkasa Malaysia (Perkasa) and Ikatan Muslimin Malaysia (ISMA) and lesser known outfits such as the Muslim Consumers Associaton of Malaysia (PPIM), the Darul Islah Welfare Organisation Malaysia (Perkid) and the Halal Muslim Entrepreneurs’ Association (Puhm), claimed that Cadbury had “crossed the line” by selling its porcine-tainted chocolates to Muslims in Malaysia, and that immediate action was needed.

“They have betrayed us Muslims by putting ‘haram’ elements through the foods we consume in our body, to weaken us Muslims.

“That is why Muslims are weak, divided,” Perkasa Selangor chief Abu Bakar Yahya told reporters, in a report by The Malay Mail Online

Perkid president Ustaz Masridzi Sat added that most social ills and apostasy cases involving Malaysian Muslims stemmed from their consumption of non-halal food and substances.

“Because the person eats pork it is difficult to guide him to the right path. When the day of judgment comes, that person will be wearing a pig-face because of what he has eaten,” he said.

“We need to unite, we must declare jihad!” said Masridzi to shouts of “Allahuakbar” (God is great) from the others in attendance.

PPIM president Datuk Nadzim Johan said the coalition has begun to discuss matters with Jaringan Melayu Malaysia (JMM) and other Malay-Muslim NGOs. JMM yesterday announced it would drag Cadbury to court to demand RM100 million in damages for “mistreating” Malaysian Muslims.

“But even RM1 billion in compensation won’t be enough.

“We want Cadbury’s factories to be shut down immediately, Muslims nationwide must boycott all their products, we have the power to take down this giant,” he said.

“Will Cadbury wash away the tainted blood in our veins? I want to wash away the tainted blood of my children who have consumed the chocolates… how will money even compensate that?” a Malay woman present shouted hysterically.

On Satruday, Jakim announced that it was suspending the halal certification given to two batches of Cadbury Dairy Milk Hazelnut and Dairy Milk Roast Almond chocolate bars, as they were discovered to contain trace elements of porcine, or pig, DNA.
