Fatal accident leads cops to human trafficking syndicate

A fatal accident on the East Coast Expressway (LPT) has led the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) to uncover a human trafficking syndicate tranporting illegal Myanmar nationals.

The activities of the syndicate were laid bare after four illegal Myanmar nationals were killed in a road accident on the LPT near Temerloh, Pahang, last week. Six others were injured when the car smuggling them skidded and overturned on the highway.

Pahang CID chiech Senior Asst Comm Datuk Mohd Zakaria Ahmad said police had remanded the driver of the vehicle, a 29-year old man from Kelantan, to assist in investigations.

SAC Mohd Zakaria said investigations have revealed that more than 10 Myanmar nationals had been smuggled into the country by the syndicate and were being transported in different vehicles at the time, according to a report by The Star Online.

“The fatal accident led the authorities to stumble upon the human trafficking activities after the four deceased were found to be illegals,” he said.

SAC Mohd Zakaria said initial investigations showed that the group was brought in via the seas along the Malaysian-Thai border in Rantau Panjang, Kelantan.
