MH17: Malaysia Airlines to reroute European flights immediately

In the wake of the tragic crash of its Flight MH17 over Ukraine, Malaysia Airlines announced today that all of its European flights will be taking alternative routes and avoiding Ukrainian airspace with immediate effect.

Flight MH17 was on a scheduled flight from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur last night when it went down in eastern Ukraine.

Bernama reports that Malaysia Airlines confirmed that the jetliner did not make a distress call. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak stated during a press conference at KLIA this morning that Ukrainian authorities believe MH17 was shot down.

MH17’s flight path, which took it over Ukrainian airspace, was declared safe by the International Civial Aviation Organisation (ICAO), according to MAS. The airline also said the International Air Transportation Association has stated that the airspace used by Flight MH17 was not subject to restrictions.
