Video: The Netherlands’ foreign minister makes emotional plea for UN action on MH17

While our own government is hard at work trying to retrieve the bodies of Malaysia Airlines Flight MH17’s victims and conducting as thorough an investigation into its tragic crash over eastern Europe, it’s good to remember that there are other countries just as affected by last week’s tragedy and the consequences that still emanate from it.

In this C-SPAN video, Dutch foreign minister Frans Timmermans makes an impassioned, almost tearful plea to the United Nations Security Council for swift and decisive action from the world governing body.

The Netherlands lost more citizens in the jetliner crash than any other nation, with 193 of the 298 people on board Flight MH17 being Dutch.

In supporting a resolution tabled by Australian foreign minister Julie Bishop, Timmermans asked the assembled council members to empathise with the plight of MH17 victims’ family members, bringing up images of spouses’ wedding rings being torn from their fingers, children’s passports strewn on the ground, and looted luggage, all perpetrated by armed thugs holding back the investigations and the process of eventual healing and closure.
