It seems scavenging for loot at the crash site of Malaysia Airlines Flight MH17 has become something of a eastern Ukrainian pastime, and displaying one’s collection is now yet another tacky excuse for selfies on Instagram.
Ektarina Parkhomenko, who identifies herself as a pro-Russian separatist sympathising with the rebels controlling the Donetsk province where Flight MH17 crashed on Thursday, July 17, with 298 people on board, posted selfies of herself wearing cosmetics allegedly looted from the crash site of the downed jetliner.
One photo shows the tube of “Catrice” mascara she used for her selfies, with the caption: “Mascara from Amsterdam, or rather from the field, well you understand.”
When another Instagram user asked her where she obtained the mascara, Parkhomenko replied, “An acquaintance of mine, a looter, gave it to me,” The Atlantic Wire reports.
After going viral on Russian and international social media circles, and the negative comments that rightly ensued, Parkhmomenko deleted her Instagram account, @zolotosya. It was revived shortly after by a hacker, @johanhatesyou, who used the same account ID to post condemnations of Parkhomenko, including a choice post with the in-graphic text:
“It’s not expensive, the things from the fields, you understand? Ekaterina Parkhomenko Town of Torez.” In the caption was a sarcastic punchline: “So the “hero” won’t be forgotten.”
