Who does PAS support for Selangor MB? We won’t know until August 13 … no, make that August 17

The drama over who will take over the reigns of the Selangor state government – or even if current Menteri Besar Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim will even step down – will have to simmer just that much longer, as PAS, one of the three Pakatan Rakyat coalition parties with a stake in Selangor’s administrative future, is stalling on a meeting to decide its stand on the matter.

The Islamic party’s secretary-general Datuk Mustafa Ali first told the party’s official newspaper Harakah that the meeting, originally scheduled for this Sunday, would be postponed until Wednesday, August 13.

That changed again today, when The Malay Mail Online reported that the meeting had once again been pushed back, now to Sunday August 17, due to the fact that some members of PAS’s top leadership could not make it for the August 13 meeting.

“Because this is an important meeting, PAS wants to make sure that everyone can attend, so God willing, everyone will be able to make it on August 17,”Mustafa was quoted as saying.

Jumping the gun on the party’s top echelon, the PAS Syura Council on Wednesday had already expressed its view that Tan Sri Khalid should be retained as Selangor MB.

The Pakatan Rakyat coalition has been openly engaged in the debate over the post of Selangor MB. PKR – Khalid’s own party – endorsed its president Datuk Seri Wan Azizah Wan Ismail for the post, after she won the state legislative seat for Kajang in what has been called the “Kajang Move”.

With PKR, and later, DAP set on installing Wan Azizah to replace Khalid, it falls to PAS to either fall in line with the official PR stand on the matter, or make its own way – something that could jeopardise the future of the coalition’s hold on the Selangor government, and even the future of the coalition itself.
