Malaysian militant reported in coma after attack in Syria

A Malaysian militant is in a coma following an attack in Syria’s ongoing civil war.

Sinar Harian reports that Lotfi Ariffin, formerly Pas Kedah’s Youth information chief, was recovering from injuries sustained during an ambush on Tuesday.

Lotfi’s elder brother, Mohd Zainon Ariffin, said yesterday, “I’ve been informed by friends on Facebook that Lotfi is in stable condition. I’m not clear on what ‘stable condition’ means in his context.

“To date, I haven’tt receieved any photos or other evidence that will corroborate the news, but my hope is that he will recover and carry on his crusade.”

Based on the last news received, Lotfi is still comatose, with injuries to his legs, arms and face.

Lotfi is alleged to have travelled to Syria to fight alongside the Ajnad As-Syam militant rebels against the Syrian army under the control of president Bashar al-Assad.

A number of Malaysian militants have been travelling to the Middle East of late to join Islamist militant movements there, chief among them Islamic State, also known as ISIS or ISIL, which now controls substantive portions of Syria and northwestern Iraq.
