JPJ to begin crackdown on Uber next month

Starting Oct 1, all private vehicles owners offering transportation using the Uber application will be fined.

The Star’s Zuhrin Azam Ahmad reported that the Road Transport Department (JPJ) will start hunting down those who provide transportation using the popular app.

According to JPJ director-general Datuk Seri Ismail Ahmad, individuals or companies providing such services could be fined RM1,000 to RM10,000. They could even be jailed for up to a year.

He was also quoted as saying that using private vehicles as paid transportation was an offence under Section 16 or the Land Public Transportation Act 2010.

“It is similar to teski sapu or illegal taxi and that is why we are taking action to stop it.

“The public should aware that by using private vehicles as taxi, they are not covered by any insurance should they get involved in any accident,”he was quoted as saying.

The report said taxis and limousine operators using the app would not be caught.
