How to tell real eggs from fake ones

Eggs, too, can be fake. This is why many Malaysians were alarmed by reports that these items were sold in the domestic market.

While the Health Ministry has assured everyone that there isn’t anything to worry about since these eggs don’t enter Malaysia, it’s probably best to know how to tell a real egg from the phony ones.

The Star Online, quoting Consumer Association of Penang (CAP) president S.M.Mohamed Idris back in 2011, reported that fake eggs had a rougher surface and were of a bigger size than real ones.

According to CAP, a broken egg smells like raw meat while a broken fake egg emits no smell. The yolk of a fake egg was also more yellowish and when shaken gives out the sound of liquid.

Such eggs, the report said, had most probably been invented in China and a do-it-yourself version was found on a website china hush.com

The Star reported that the Health Ministry had given a list of items used in the making of fake eggs: its egg shells were made of chemicals such as calcium carbonate ; the egg yolk and white were made of sodium alginate, gelatine, alum, benzoic acid, calcium chloride, water and other chemicals similar to what is shown online.
