Coconuts Hot Spot: Feast on delicious Korean BBQ in the tranquil, garden-inspired Ola

COCONUTS HOT SPOT — There are countless Korean restaurants in the Solaris area in Mont Kiara but Ola stands out above the rest, simply because of its one-of-a-kind deco and excellent food.

To set up a restaurant with a garden-like surrounding inside a commercial building is no mean feat.  The owners of Ola Korean Barbeque Garden have done exactly that and that is a great testament of their passion and dedication.  Water features, tiled pathways, potted plants, artificial grass and wooden garden benches contribute to the lovely and relaxing ambience of this unique restaurant.

A good variety of banchan is served here using authentic ingredients like “yeolmu”, a small thin Korean radish used in making kimchi.  The fresh kimchi here is excellent – sweet crisp Napa cabbage leaves immersed in a delicious spicy tangy beanpaste marinade.

What’s better than barbequed meats? Barbequed smoked meats, of course – the restaurant’s speciality.  Prior to smoking the meats, a selection of Korean medicinal herbs including ginseng are used to marinate them.  The smoking process seals in the taste and goodness of the herbs into the meat.

Our platter of smoked pork and duck emits the most amazing smoky aromas.  Slices of smoked samgyeopsal (pork belly) and smoked duck have been grilled till the edges are crisp with fatty crunch.  The herbs and spices do a wonderful job to balance out the gamey taste of ducks, resulting in grilled smoked duck that are just irresistible.

The Dwaeji Hunje Deung Galbi (barbequed smoked pork ribs) is one of their signature items.  The ribs are barbequed to perfection – the sides are nicely charred while the meat remains tender and juicy.

We love their mungbeans pancake.  Known as the “poor man’s pancake”, the Nokdu Bindaetteok (mungbean pancake) is delicious.  In the olden times in Korea, only the rich people can afford to use meat in their pancakes while the poor ones could only use mungbeans and kimchi.

The coarser texture of crushed mungbeans gives the pancake a nice bite and are enhanced with a slight spicy tinge from the kimchi.

Generally the service here is fast and cheerful.  Banchans are replenished promptly with smiles.  The spacious garden concept is a hit with diners, too.

Prices of BBQ meats start from RM28 while side dishes, rice and noodles start from RM20.  Set lunches are also available, starting from RM30 (minimum 2 pax).
