Royal Navy ship capsizes in Lumut

A Royal Malaysian Navy (TLDM) vessel capsized while being docked for maintenance at the Lumut Naval Base last night. 

The KD Perantau sunk at 11.17pm last night after dramatically taking on water while being trasnported to the Boustead Naval Shipyard (BNS) for maintenance and repair work.

A TLDM spokesperson told Harian Metro, “Almost all movable components of the ship, such as the motor, pumps and telemetry gear, had been removed as per standard operating procedure as the ship was being prepped for maintenance.

“No casualties or injuries were caused by the sinking.”

The KD Perantau is a hydrographic research vessel buit at the Hong Leong-Lursen Shipyard in Penang, and was launched on October 12 1998. 

The ship was sent in for routine maintenance and a refit on November 10, and was scehduled to be returned to the TLDM in fully operational condition by August 10 next year.
