Empty Hundred Quarters in Brickfields now target of vandals, says report

Brickfields has been in the news for some weeks now, ever since word of a potential redevelopment to one iconic building – the Vivekananda ashram – tore through the media.

But another famous landmark from old Brickfields – the 99-year-old Hundred Quarters –  has reportedly become the playground for vandals.

A team from the New Straits Times visited the area recently and reported that ever since its last occupants moved out three months ago, the place has had its window panes, grilles, gates, doors and other fixtures ripped off.

The daily also found that vandals had torn the tape used to cordon off the area. Nearby residents quoted in the report spoke of their fear that the area would soon turn into a breeding ground for two menaces: mosquitoes and drug addicts.

The houses, situated along Jalan Chan Ah Tong and Jalan Rozario, had been home to government servants for decades and were called the ‘hundred’ quarters to reflect the exact number of units.
