Australian traveller charged with trafficking 1.5kg of meth, faces death sentence

An Australian woman was charged with trafficking 1.5kg of methamphetamines into Malaysia earlier this month.

The woman, 51-year old mother of four Maria Elvira Exposto, is accused of committing the offence at the International Arrival Hall of KLIA’s Main Terminal at 3.40pm on December 7.

Exposto is charged under Section 39B(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which carries the death penalty upon conviction.

After the charge was read, Exposto was seen nodding her head, although no plea was recorded, according to Bernama.

The case has been transferred to the High Court, with January 23 set as the date for the next hearing.
