Cars are for losers: DBKL to add permanent bike lanes downtown

Following the massive popularity of the KL Car Free Morning programme introduced last year, Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) is initiating the construction of permanent bicycle lanes throughout the downtown area.

Mayor Ahmad Phesal Talib said the move was aimed to reduce traffic congestion and air pollution in the city.

“If a programme similar to the KL Car Free Morning succeeds in reducing traffic congestion on work days, we will identify key locations where bicycle lanes should be built,” he told Harian Metro

KL Car Free Mornings take place every first and third Sundays of the month, from 7am to 9am. The programme covers a ring of downtown KL roads, which are closed to motor traffic.

“Commuters will no longer need to drive to work; they can opt to cycle instead, which will consequently reduce carbon monoxide emissions as well,” Ahmad Phesal added.

DNKL had previously announced the contrsuction of three bike lane routes into and through parts of the city worth a total of RM3 million, including an 5.5km stretch from MidValley to Dataran Merdeka, a 4km route between Wangsa Maju and Taman Melati, and another 2km route within Taman Batu Muda.
