BB Plaza to shut down in March, making way for a luxury condo

Lifelong KLites remember it being the location of epic Metrojaya midnight sales, thronging weekend crowds and after-school dates … and now, it’s all coming to an end. BB Plaza, one of the city’s oldest shopping malls, is calling it quits in March.

The mall, built and managed by the Federal Government’s own Urban Development Authority (UDA) Holdings, has lost much of its shine of late, due to the rise of more upscale and trendier neighbours such as Pavilion, Berjaya Times Square, Low Yat Plaza, and the refurbished Fahrenheit88, pulling business and customers away from the decades-old BB Plaza.

Most damaging to its business is the ongoing construction of the Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) line right in front of the building, a project that completely blocked the facade of BB Plaza, forcing front-facing stores – some of them only recently opened – to close up either temporarily or for good.

UDA Holdings chairperson Johari Abdul Ghani said last year that the MRT-related development would tie in with BB Plaza’s rejuvenation, with the mall set to be connected to the underground MRT station, The Rakyat Post reports.

That plan might still be in the works, but the mall itself won’t be around to see it. By March, the entire mall would have been cleared out, and in its place, UDA Holdings is planning to build a 60-storey luxury condominium tower standing on top of a three-level shopping mall.

So long, BB Plaza. Thanks for the memories.
