AirAsia abolishes fuel surcharge for all flights

AirAsia will be abolishing fuel surcharge for all airlines in the group with immediate effect.

The decision, made in view of the drastic drop in global oil prices, will also be applicable for its low-cost long haul affiliates AirAsia X, Thai AirAsia X and Indonesia AirAsia X.

In 2008, the budget airliner did away with fuel surcharge on all its domestic and international flights, but as the price of fuel spiked, it was re-introduced in 2011.

“We are a high-value, low-fare airline and we will continue to strive to make flying as affordable as possible. This decision has been made in November 2014, which was in line with declining global oil prices,” Air Asia group chief executive officer Tan Sri Tony Fernandes said in a statement today.

“However, we are only able to implement it now, but we believe removing fuel surcharge and reducing travel costs will be a huge boost to the tourism industry. This will be a plus point for consumers, but the economy will also benefit from this as the tourism industry is a great job creator,” he said.

With this decision, AirAsia said travellers could purchase domestic and international flight tickets for as low as RM19 and RM49 respectively.
