Lee Chong Wei will quit badminton if his two-year ban sticks

Disgraced national badminton hero Lee Chong Wei will hang up his racquet for good if he’s slapped with a two-year ban for failing a doping test.

However, the former world #1 said he would continue with his competitive career if his appeal to the Badminton World Federation (BWF) was successful.

“If in the end I am suspended for two years, then I will not pursue my badminton career afterwards,” he said in an interview with BBC.

Chong Wei is currently under a suspension, and faces a ban of up to two years for failing a doping test at last August’s World Championships in Copenhagen.

His appeal to the world governing body for badminton is due to be heard in early February.

The Star Online reports that Chong Wei has been chafing under the terms of his suspension, and was sad after being informed that he tested positive for banned substances, the first time that had ever happened in his 15-year professional career.

“Throughout the ordeal a lot of my fans from around the world supported me and hoped that I would compete again,” he said.

His suspension has damaged his global ranking, but not by much: due to his absence in badminton tourneys, Chong Wei has now slipped to #3 in the world.
