New Jakim flyer says homosexuals are more prone to mental illness, infidelity

A new flyer allegedly released by the Malaysian Islamic Development Department (Jakim) during Valentine’s Day attempted to “debunk” a host of myths about homosexuality to the public.

The flyer, titled “10 Myths About Homosexuality”, claims among other things that homosexuals are more prone to mental illness and are more likely to be unfaithful to their partners.

Flyer also claims that homosexuals are not as seriously affected by discrimination due to the “higher levels of education” enjoyed by homosexuals.

“Homosexuals are less likely to enter into a committed relationship, less likely to be sexually faithful to a partner, even if they have one, and are less likely to remain committed for a lifetime, than are heterosexuals” the flyer claimed.

“They also experience higher rates of domestic violence than heterosexual married couples.”

The flyer also claims as “fact” that homosexuals are more at risk of contracting sexually-transmitted diseases, and experience higher levels of mental illness, as well as suffering from substance abuse.

Homosexuals are also able to change their sexual orientation through counselling and therapy, and efforts or campaigns to dissuade the public to these efforts are a breach of ethics and rob homosexuals of the opportunity to discard their deviant lifestyle.

Zurairi AR of The Malay Mail Online reports that the contents of the flyer are similar to claims put forth in a 2010 pamphlet by the Family Research Council (FRC), a conservative evangelical Christian organisation in the United States which has bee combatting gay rights, abortion rights, embryonic stem-cell research and pornography in the US since its founding in 1983.

The flyer also contained US-centric facts, such as homosexuals making up less than 3% of the American population.
