Altantuya Murder: PAS teleconference with Sirul thwarted by voicemail redirects

An attempt by the Parti Islam SeMalaysia (PAS) to hold a teleconference with convicted murderer Sirul Azhar Omar, ostensibly to shed shocking new information on the murder of Mongolian model and interpreter Altantuya Shariibuu ended in failure today, as calls to the former police commando ended up in his voicemail inbox.

PAS information chief Mahfuz Omar, witnessed by dozens of reporters at his party’s headquarters in Jalan Raja Laut, had to apologise call after call made to Sirul’s mobile phone were redirected to Sirul’s voicemail.

Mahfuz explained that his last contact with Sirul was a text message sent at 10.44am to confirm that the teleconference was to take place.

Sirul, convicted of being one of two men responsible for the grisly murder of Altantuya Shariibuu in 2006, is being held in Australia, whose government has denied Putrajaya’s requests for extradition on the grounds that it is against Australian policy to allow any person to face the death penalty.

Last week Sirul told Malaysiakini that he had acted under orders to carry out the murder, and that the “real” murderers were still free and at large

“I was under orders. The important people with motive (to murder Altantuya Shaariibuu) are still free,” he said.

“It is not like I do not love the police (force) or the country, but I acted under orders.”

Altantuya was linked to her former lover Abdul Razak Baginda, a former confidante and adviser to Prime Minister Najib Razak, who was Defence Minister at the time of the murder. Abdul Razak was acquitted of the charge of abetting the model’s murder.

The Malay Mail Online reports that Mahfuz promised to fly out to Syndey next Monday to seek more answers from Sirul in person.
