One worker dead, another trapped in Semantan MRT construction site accident

An incident at the Semantan Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) construction site has left one worker dead, while another sustained serious injuries after being trapped in rubble.

The incident which happened at 1.20pm involved three workers, according to a statement by MRT Corp. 

“Forty-year-old Rijaul Abdul Goni was killed on the spot, while another worker, Shanaullah, 37, suffered severe injuries and was rushed to the Kuala Lumpur Hospital (HKL).

“The third worker, Rozul Karim was not injured,” said the 4.30pm statement, as quoted by The Star Online

The body of the deceased worker has been sent to the Kuala Lumpur Hospital. 

“The body has been sent there for a post mortem and we hope that it will be able to determine the cause of his death,” said MRT Corp strategic communications director Amir Mahmood Razak. 

“We are really regretful of the incident and all works at the location has been halted until the investigations are complete.”

At the time of the incident, the two workers were fabricating a steel cage at the site, at which point a cable overhead snapped, causing steel bars to collapse on the workers below.
