Altantuya Murder: Sirul’s mother has flown off to Australia … with PAS’s Mahfuz in tow

The mother of one of Altantuya Shariibuu’s convicted murderers, Sirul Azhar Umar, has flown off to Australia to see her son in detention there … and she’s been taken there by PAS information chief Mahfuz Omar.

Mahfuz told reporters that he was taking Sirul’s mother, 72-year old Piah Samad, and his younger sister, Noriatin Umar, 37, on a “humanitarian mission to bring a mother to visit her son whom she misses dearly”.

Their flight left KLIA at 11.30pm last night.

“I have received the visa approval from the Australian embassy and have asked for protection from the Australian authorities while we are there.

“We hope this trip will not pose a threat to any party and will not be met with any interference upon our departure from Malaysia,” Mahfuz told Astro Awani

Sirul is currently being held in a detention centre in Sydney, while Australian authorities deliberate on Putrajaya’s request to have him exrtadited back to Malaysia. Australian foreign policy does not allow the extradition of any individual to face the death penalty, which was passed down to Sirul upon his conviction.

He also expressed hope that Piah could conclusively verify that the person whom Mahfuz had contacted via teleconference last Monday was indeed Sirul.

Last Monday, Mahfuz organised a teleconference between himself and Sirul, which was attended by the press. The teleconference was meant to be part of a tell-all exposé of what Sirul claimed was the actual plot to murder Shariibuu in 2006, along with who was behind the murder.

Sirul earlier claimed that he was merely following orders in carrying out the grisly murder of the Mongolian model and interpreter, and that he had no knowledge of either Altantuya Shariibuu or her former lover, advisor and confidante of then-Defence Minister Najib Razak, Abdul Razak Baginda.

Abdul Razak was acquitted of the charge of abetting the murder.
