Sihat dan Whaaaat: There’s fake Milo on sale in shops now

Chocolatey malt goodness? Vitamins and minerals in every single gulp? Not so much. More like fraud and not-so-nutritious shadiness.

Nestlé’s signature chocolate beverage brand Milo has been the victim of a counterfeiture scam, as a recent raid in Negeri Sembilan by the Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Ministry revealed.

How alarming is this news? Well, in 2009 Nestlé said Malaysia has the highest number of Milo drinkers in the world, so it’s a pretty big deal. A whole country might be in the process of getting shafted here.

On March 13, the ministry seized RM250,000 worth of imitation Milo products from counterfeiters in Mantin, Negeri Sembilan. The products were slated to be distributed across the state.

The discovery has prompted Milo Malaysia’s Facebook page to alert consumers on the possibility that the chocolate they’re chugging might not be the real thing:

The brand page has also taken to informing netizens on how to spot a fake refill pack of powdered Milo:

The post seems to be the first of a series aiming to educate consumers on how to spot bogus Milo products on store shelves. As such, the brand (of course) wants consumers to follow it on Facebook to get more updates on the issue.

If you’ve been duped into buying a jumbo pack of sort-Milo, snap a picture of your purchase and send it to kl@coconuts.co. Tell us about your experience – does it still, you know, taste like chocolate? Are you a superior athlete despite drinking fake Milo?
