Indonesian women are crossing the border just to give birth in Malaysian hospitals

Many Indonesian women are making the trek across the border into Sarawak to give birth in a Malaysian hospital.

Bernama cites a report from Indonesian daily Kompas which stated that most pregnant women in Kapuas Hulu in Badau, near the Indonesia-Malaysia border, are choosing to give birth in Sarawak hospitals so their children will receive better medical care, and to enable them to enrol in Malaysian schools.

These pregnant women cross over into Malaysia legally, the report says.

There are also cases of Indonesian women getting preliminary treatment in Malaysian government hospitals, but have their deliveries carried out in Indonesia, in order to register the birth of their children in their home country.

Indonesian Health Minister Nila F Moeloek urged women in the country to stick with the country’s own health centres, as Indonesian medical care and facilities are better now than before.
