Permatang Pauh by-election: May 7 declared a holiday

The Penang state government has declared May 7 — poling day for the Permatang Pauh by-election — a holiday.

This, according to its chief minister Lim Guan Eng, is to enable all voters in the parliamentary constituency to come out and vote in full force, The Rakyat Post reports.

“We also hope that those from Permatang Pauh working outside the state will come back and vote. It is also also hoped that those working outstation could be given leave by their employers to exercise their voting rights. Even if they cannot be given leave, hopefully employers can grant them some time off,” he was quoted as saying.

More than 71,000 voters are expected to turn up to choose their new Member of Parliament after Opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s seat became vacant following his imprisonment for sodomy.
