City Hall may limit construction of parking lots to encourage pedestrian culture

If you can’t find a space to park your vehicle in Kuala Lumpur, there only one thing left to do: ditch your vehicle and opt for public transportation.

Urbanites plagued with the perennial lack of parking lots in the city may have heard the same tune for years, but mayor Datuk Seri Ahmad Phesal Talib seems to be taking this seriously.

As far as he is concerned, the best solution for the lack of parking lots is simply to shift to a pedestrian culture instead. And to do this, Ahmad Phesal said the government has formed a policy to reduce the number of car parks in order to encourage more pedestrians in KL.

“In Kuala Lumpur, car ownership is high, so we want people to reduce automobile travel and shift to public transportation,” The Rakyat Post quotes him as saying.

“We are looking at limiting the construction of new car parks to one parking lot per 1,000sq ft of building,” he was quoted further adding that creating more spaces for vehicles would only discourage city folk from using alternative modes of transport.
