Mandatory garbage separation to begin on Sept 1

The joy of having just one bin to dump all your garbage may soon be confined only to your desktop, because in about three months you’re going to have get your hands dirty: mandatory garbage separation is coming to town.

From September 1, all households in Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya, Pahang, Johor, Malacca, Negri Sembilan, Perlis and Kedah will have to divide their waste material into recyclable and non-recyclable items.

The Solid Waste and Solid Cleansing Management Corp (SWCorp) had announced recently that the new solid waste management process will be implemented in stages.

“Waste isolation will involve the disposal of food waste for the first two days of collection every week and the third day collection is for recyclable garbage,” its chief executive officer Datuk Ab Rahim Md Noor had said in April, Bernama reported.

The company chosen to carry out garbage collection in these states would also act as the eyes and ears of the corporation, he said, taking note of those who refused to comply. By 2016, a maximum compound of RM1,000 would be imposed on those who flout the rule.

So now you know. Go on and get an extra bin.
