Ampang’s “People’s Refrigerator” channels food from donors straight to the needy

Ampang’s member of Parliament Zuraida Kamaruddin of PKR has a novel approach to help feed the needy in her constituency; working together with restaurants in the area, Zuraida has introduced the “People’s Refrigerator” programme.

Aimed at connecting restaurants directly with families in need, the “People’s Refrigerator” programme’s premise is simple: participating restaurants agree to pass on their excess food stock to underprivileged families in order to help with their needs, and to cut down on wastage.

The Ampang Parliamentary Public Service Centre told Sinar Harian in a statement that the programme had been presented to the Selangor state government for possible rollout across the state, but for the time being, Ampang is hosting the dry run for the initiative.

“Through this programme, members of the community with access to surplus food – not leftovers, but fresh produce they can’t possibly use up – can pass on that food to those in need,” Zuraida said.

“Fresh food like chicken, fish, beef, fruit, and vegetables should be packaged and labelled properly.

“Anyone who feels they need some help in stocking up on food for their households can turn up and take what they need. Everything is done by the people, for the people.”

One of the People’s Refrigerators will be placed at the Ampang Satay Station outlet and will be open every day except Wednesday. Food donation times will run from 9am to 11pm, while food can be picked up by the needy from 7pm to 11pm.

Zuraida added that her office will be providing mobile pickup services for donors who are not able to make it to the dropoff centres.
