Faster train service linking KL to Butterworth ready next month

The long-awaited faster train service that connects Kuala Lumpur to Butterworth, Penang will begin next month.

Transport Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai said the Electric Train Service (ETS) — which shortens rail travel time between the two cities to just three hours — would first be tested by government leaders from both state and federal, Bernama reports.

“The ETS will be a boon for people living along its route. I will announce when it will be open to the public on July 9 and the packages that will be offered,” he was quoted as saying.

It is expected that the ten new coaches run by Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTMB) will operational by January 2016, transporting up to 350 passengers at speeds of 160kph.

The top speed for trains at the moment is 140kph.
