Geologist says Lahad Datu may be next to be hit by quake

Since the magnitude 5.9 earthquake in Sabah last month which, some 100 aftershocks have been recorded in the area.

Now, a new possibility emerges. According to a local geologist, the district of Lahad Datu may be next to be hit by an earthquake.

Professor Dr Felix Tongkul told The Rakyat Post’s Sandra Sokial that while it was difficult to tell exactly when it would happen, the signs were apparent in research conducted there.

Tongkul said, however, that the due to frequent tremors in the area following the June 5 earthquake that killed 18 people, the stress build up could be released, which may avert the possibility of an earthquake.

“These incidences of the smaller tremors may help avert a major earthquake from occurring because it releases energy (stress) all the time” he told TRP, urging all relevant authorities to be prepared nevertheless.
