SPAD sets up special team to probe LRT brake failures

The series of unfortunate events that fell upon our beloved Light Rail Transit (LRT) yesterday has prompted the Land Public Transport Commission (SPAD) to set up a team to investigate what went wrong.

Although it has been reported that yesterday’s twin mishaps were the result of brake failures, SPAD wants to find out if there were elements of negligence or criminal activities, Bernama reports.

The investigation is expected to take up to three months, according to chairman Tan Sri Syed Hamid Albar.

“The report will contain the cause of the incident and proposed improvements, we will also get a report from Prasarana Malaysia Berhad to be combined with this report,” he told Bernama.

“The trains have been checked periodically, in accordance with Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) that were set, it may also have occurred due to the weather. Therefore, we can not make early assumptions,” he was quoted further.

Yesterday, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s called for a safety audit on the incidents.
