Muhyiddin Yassin’s daughter releases new music video in solidarity with all Malaysians

Najwa Mahiaddin, R&B and soul songstress, and daughter of former Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin, today released the music video for her new single “After The Rain” … and it’s dedicated to all Malaysians in the hopes that it will “provide comfort and strength to us all in these trying times.”

Posted up onto her official Facebook page, the video for “After The Rain” is a sombre yet hopeful ballad urging all Malaysians to be steadfast in the face of adversity and challenges, with a stoic-looking Najwa assuringly crooning that “after the rain comes the sun”:

The music video is appended with the hashtag #KeepYourHeadUpMalaysia.

While it might be easy to immediately relate this single with the current political climate in the country, given the fate that recently befell Najwa’s father, the message of the song might also address issues that have hit Malaysians hard in recent months: the East Coast floods, the disappearance of Flight MH370 and the shooting down of Flight MH17, and the country’s shaky financial situation.

Muhyiddin was removed from his posts as Deputy Prime Minister and Education Minister during last week’s Cabinet reshuffle, in what has been seen as Prime Minister Najib Razaks’ purge of dissenting voices in his administration, particularly in the matter of his handling of the 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) scandals.

Regardless, we can’t think of a sweeter, more quietly hopeful song to bring Malaysians together. Najwa’s father, at any rate, must be proud.
