Coconuts Hot Spot: Brolly – The food emprium with everything from fresh oysters to pizzas

COCONUTS HOT SPOT — Brolly is a huge emporium of food.  Glorious food that’s categorised under several “brands”, sectioned nicely in the menu.  From fresh oysters to seafood to pizzas to BBQ favourites, it can be difficult to choose from the huge variety and repeated visits are definitely on the cards if one is to savour everything listed.

Here’s a brief rundown of what’s good at Brolly:

MOLEY’S OYSTER BAR

Oysters are the stars here – have them “au natural” or “dressed up” with various sauces.  Have either the French or Irish ones but why not have both?

Harvested from the French Atlantic Coast, the Fine de Claire No.2 Oysters and flown in fresh, these oysters have a perfect balance of saltiness and sweetness.

Kelly’s Gigas No.4 Oysters – these plump oysters cultivated in the beautiful inlet of Galway Bay, Ireland are well-rounded in taste and texture.

Besides eating them raw, the oysters are also served as Virgin Bloody Mary shooters, topped with spicy sriracha sauce or baked in cheese.

CRAB FACTORY

Crabs mania is a daily thing here.  Besides the regular meat crabs, check out their Brown Crabs and Spanner Crabs as well.  Po’ Boys – those classic Louisiana sandwiches with meat or seafood served in a long baguette-like French bun is another speciality here.

Po’ Boys with fried prawns, fried soft-shell crabs and pulled beef brisket are served on a bed of crispy fries.  Trust me, this is a sufficient meal on its own as portions are generous.

EMBER & BARA BBQ

Ember & Bara is immensely popular as the menu includes a huge variety of meats and seafood grilled on open charcoal stoves.  There are 4 types of sauces each for meats and seafood.  Their old-fashioned BBQ sauces here are the bomb as they come with coffee and chocolate versions!  Their sambals are fiery and wickedly addictive.

We had a barrel of BBQ Small Yabbies which yielded deliciously sweet meat once we got the tiresome peeling done.

To cool off our palate after the sambals, the salads are a godsend.  The Grilled Watermelon & Pineapple Minty Salad is my favourite – nothing beats sweet juicy watermelon slices  eaten together with cool refreshing mint leaves.

RAKSAKSA MIRAI

“Raksaksa” brings me back to the good old days of “Ultra Man” and that’s exactly where the inspiration came.  Japanese curry rice is the theme here.

There are 5 types of flavoured rice to choose from (signature, tobiko, garlic shallot, spicy shijimi & mango), various meats, seafood, omelette and vegetarian accompaniment and finally 2 choices of curry: traditional or coconut.

NOVE 9 PIZZERIA

The greenish hue of the thin pizza base is due to the addition of blended spinach in it.  There are 6 savoury pizzas to choose from and our favourites are the Lambogarlic and Thai Beef Guava Salad.  Minced lamb and lamb sausage flooded with garlic sauce make up the Lambogarlic – the combination of flavours here can best be described as “deliciously heady”.

Thai Beef Guava Salad

The piquant spicy flavours of beef, crunchy guava and tangy mango work incredibly well in the Thai Beef Guava Salad pizza.  There’s even a sweet pizza called Miloreo, a Milo pizza topped with crushed Oreo biscuits.

MY WING MAN

It’s chicken wings and only chicken wings on this menu.  Crunchy oatmeal-coated deep-fried chicken wings are the order of the day, tossed in sauces of your choice.  There’s a good variety of interesting sauces to choose from: cencaluk, spicy chocolate, kung po, sambal, Japanese curry and Korean bean paste.

VariEATy

Light eaters would be happy with the small bites from VariEATy.  Take your pick of grilled, fried and soup items from the menu.  Have some Kushiyaki (3 skewers per serving) – these grilled skewers hold tasty bites of meats, seafood and vegetables.  My favourite skewers are the addictive chicken hearts and seafood tofu.

The piping hot Short Ribs Soup’s very comforting.  It’s a delicious milder version of the local “sup tulang” using quality Australian beef short ribs.  The meat was fork-tender yet able to hold its shape on the ribs and the soup was good to its last drop.
