150,000 devotees set to accompany Silver Chariot to Batu Caves tonight

Some 150,000 worshippers are expected to accompany the Silver Chariot in the annual procession which officially starts the Thaipusam festival this year.

The procession will begin at the Sri Maha Mariamman Temple in Jalan Tun H.S. Lee at 10pm and continue until Batu Caves at 2.30pm tomorrow.

The 7.3-metre chariot bears the idols of Lord Murugan and his two consorts, Valli and Theivanai.

“The chariot will return to the Sri Maha Mariamman Temple at midnight on Monday,” Batu Caves Sri Subramaniar Swamy Temple chairman Tan Sri R. Nadarajah told Bernama.

Several roads in the city will be shut for the procession and they are: Jalan Tun H.S. Lee, Jalan Sultan, Jalan Pudu, Jalan Tun Perak, Jalan Leboh Ampang, Jalan Ampang, Jalan Munshi Abdullah, Jalan Dang Wangi, Jalan Raja Laut, Jalan Sri Amar, Jalan Tun Razak, Jalan Ipoh, Jalan Kovil Hilir, Jalan Perhentian, and Jalan Ipoh leading to Batu Caves.
