Massive python found in Penang could be the world’s longest snake

[UPDATE]: In a new (and sad) development, the snake has reportedly died in captivity. More here

Could it really be that the world’s longest snake was just found in Penang?

As far as mega-long reptiles go, this discovery at a construction site in Penang could be the frontrunner for a brand new listing in record books.

The Malay Mail Online reports that the massive reticulated python — measuring eight metres and weighing 250kg — was spotted by workers at a construction area in Paya Terubong, under a tree on Thursday afternoon (damn, that heat!)

They then called up emergency services and personnel from the Civil Defence Department captured the reptile.

The longest snake ever in captivity is currently ‘Medusa’, a 7.67-metre reticulated python from Missouri, United States, weighing 158.8kg, about 90kg lighter than Penang’s behemoth.

The snake, now kept at the civil defence team’s Sungai Ara office, will be handed to the state Wildlife Department before its length is verified by the Guinness World Records body.
