The new Independence Day: Resurgence trailer threw KLCC at the London Bridge(?!)

We might take them for granted, but the Kuala Lumpur City Centre’s Petronas Towers are among the most recognizable buildings in the world.

And now aliens have gone and smashed them to bits.

Wait, don’t evacuate your homes just yet: we’re talking about the latest trailer for Independence Day: Resurgence, director Roland Emmerich’s long-gestating sequel to the 1996 blockbuster hit Independence Day. You know, the one where Will Smith uppercuts an alien invader, then drags it across the desert while smoking a cigar.

The original ID4 featured what would become Emmerich’s signature subgenre of CGI-assisted disaster porn in the form of the White House getting blown to smithereens (and then New York freezing over in The Day After Tomorrow, and the entire planet gulping down seawater in 2012). ID4: Resurgence has a lot of that, too, and Malaysians can all be proud/dismayed to know that our favourite twin towers are clearly shown in the movie’s trailer, which debuted on YouTube earlier today.

Only … we dunno. They seem somewhat displaced. Like, 10,500km displaced.

Watch the trailer below, and tell us what you think. KLCC makes its dramatic appearance towards the end, at about 2:19 on the timecode:

Did you catch it? No? Let us help you out:

Still moving a bit too fast for you? Understandable. Roland Emmerich has vision, but it’s on peyote and steroids. Here:

So … should we expect the full feature film to explain to us how the aliens (we assume it’s the aliens who did it, and not the UK government or something) transported the KLCC twin towers from Kuala Lumpur all the way to London, only to have them crash down on London Bridge? Because, really, what?

We’re not going to lie, this has us intrigued. And the thought of Malaysia’s most globally recognised architectural marvels damn near murdering Jeff Goldblum – in London, no less! – makes us want to sit, horrified yet fixated, in our neighbourhood cineplex trying to figure out just what the hell is going on.

Independence Day: Resurgence hits theatres on June 24. May God have mercy on us all.
