Klang’s free bus service not popular, only ferries a handful of passengers

It is there and it is free, yet, the Selangor government’s free bus service in Klang has not been getting the love most free things get.

A report by The Star Metro said that the Selangor Smart Bus — known previously as the Selangorku Bus which started the free service in Petaling Jaya back in 2014— has been ferrying just ‘a handful of passengers’ during its 3km loop around Klang.

Despite having been around for nine months, people are still no getting on board the bus.

This service — in which two red and yellow buses provide free rides from 6am to 10pm — starts from Jalan Batu Tiga Lama near Wisma Hafiz and  heads towards Jambatan Musaeddin on the way to Klang South.

People interviewed for the report blamed the low popularity of the buses on its ‘unsuitable route’ which were not meeting the needs of commuters.

Klang Consumer Association president A. Devadass was quoted as saying that the buses were not suitable for the needy and old folks

“There is no point wasting public funds if the service is not being fully utilised,” he was quoted as saying.

Similar free bus services in Selangor are available in Shah Alam and Subang Jaya.
