Century-old shipwreck discovered as Sungai Pahang water level drops

It’s no secret by now that water levels across the peninsular have generally dropped to disturbing levels, due to the excessively hot temperatures brought by the El Nino phenomenon.

It was the case too for Sungai Pahang, where water seemed to have receded. Except here, the dropping water level has given way to a sunken treasure: a British merchant vessel that had gone down under ‘mysterious circumstances’ about a century ago.

Villagers in Kampung Tanjung in Paloh Hinai were the ones who first noticed the 100-year old wreck, Bernama reports, as it became more obvious due to receeding waters over the past month.

Kampung Paloh Hinau Development and Security Committee chairman Abdul Rashid Abdul Rahman said: “”The story of the shipwreck is popular among the villages, having been handed down by word of mouth from generation to generation.”

“It is said that the vessel sank due to the arrogant attitude of the captain and after the ‘spirits’ were disturbed,” he was quoted as saying.

The ship was a classic 1900s vessel, Abdul Rashid said; one that had a funnel, anchor rope, propeller and engine combustion chamber.
