Teenager in Kedah hospitalised for suspected rat urine disease

A teenager has been warded for suspected leptospirosis in Kedah, just days after a student died from the deadly disease in Negeri Sembilan.

Nur Iman Nor Hisham, 17, was admitted to the Sultan Abdul Halim Hospital (HSAH) after swimming in Lata Bukit Perak, Pendang on May 1, Bernama reports.

He was placed in the hospital’s intensive care unit after suffering from fever, vomiting and body aches less that two weeks after his picnic.

“The victim is still in critical condition and needs intensive care by physicians. The initial assessment shows there are signs of leptospirosis, and the hospital has sent blood samples to the Institute for Medical Research in Kuala Lumpur for validation,” Kedah State Health director Datuk Dr Norhizan Ismail was quoted as saying.

On May 15, a college student died after contracting leptospirosis, or rat urine disease. He had taken a dip at the Jeram Toi Recreation Park near Seremban on 30 April.

Leptospirosis, or commonly known as rat urine disease, is an infectious bacterial disease that occurs in rodents, dogs, and other mammals and can be transmitted to humans.
