Motorists who try to cheat on the road by using the emergency lane — meant, you know, for emergencies such as to allow an ambulance to pass — will be charged in court.
The Road Transport Department (JPJ) has decided that the traffic offence was getting so bad that a compound was not enough to deter it, The Star Online reports.
The department revealed that 91 vehicles were recorded blocking the way of an ambulance which was on its way to an accident scene at the North South Expressway near Ayer Keroh recently.
The ambulance had reportedly taken one hour to reach the scene where two motorcyclists collided. Both victims, however, died on the spot.
“We are going all out to investigate the matter and offenders will not be issued a compound but directly charged in court under Section 53 of the Road Transport Act 1957 which carries a maximum fine of RM2,000 or six-month or both,” JPJ Enforcement Division chief Datuk V. Valluvan was quoted as saying.
