Anti-crime NGO chief R Sri Sanjeevan among two held in alleged extortion case

The police have reportedly confirmed the arrest of anti-crime NGO chairman, R Sri Sanjeevan over alleged extortion.

The Malaysian Crime Watch Task Force (MyWatch) was arrested last night, along with his 26-year-old driver, Free Malaysia Today reported.

Bukit Aman CID Director Mohmad Salleh confirmed his identity in a statement, as reported by the news site, adding that a police report had been filed against Sanjeevan by a complainant, a 38-year-old running an illegal gambling business.

The complainant alleged that Sanjeevan had threatened to publish accusations against the complainant, unless he paid Sanjeevan RM25,000 in “protection” money, Mohmad was quoted as saying.

According to the report, both men were arrested after the complainant handed the money to Sanjeevan — a “trap” that led to him being caught” — in his Toyota Vellfire near the Nilai Toll Plaza.

FMT reported that the complainant also claimed to have audio recordings of the 31-year-old Sanjeevan allegedly threatening him to ‘play ball’ or risk having his illegal business exposed.

Police also reportedly recovered RM16,000 from the vehicle along with five mobile phones.

The Star Online quoted Sanjeevan’s lawyer Gobind Singh Deo as saying that Sanjeevan is expected to be freed once his remand order expires today. Police, however, can apply to have the remand period extended.
