IGP: Movida nightclub attack first ever successful IS-linked attack on Malaysian soil

Malaysian police have confirmed that the attack on the Movida night club in Puchong was in fact the first ever successful Islamic State-linked attack on Malaysian soil.

Inspector-General of Police Khalid Abu Bakar confirmed this, as reported by The Star Online.

He also reportedly revealed that the attack was carried out by locals who were directly instructed by IS member, Muhamad Wanndy Mohamad Jedi from Syria.

Police also released details and mugshots of two men wanted over the case.

“Since the attack on June 28 to July 1, we have arrested 15 people including the two men who threw the hand grenade,” he was quoted as saying.

“Based on our investigations, we found there is truth to the involvement of IS elements in the incident,” Khalid was quoted as saying in a Malaysiakini report.

““We found that the two of them had received instructions from one of our citizens in Syria, Muhamad Wanndy Muhamad Jedi, who told them to launch attacks in Malaysia against senior government leaders, senior police officers, and judges, because these three obstruct their activities,” he was quoted further.

On June 28, a hand grenade exploded inside the Puchong nightclub, leaving eight people injured. Police had initially ruled out terrorism, looking instead at a possible gang-related dispute.

Soon after the attack, Muhammad Wanndy claimed on his Facebook page that the attack had been carried out by two followers of IS.
