First adult diphtheria case reported in Malaysia

A housewife from Rembau, Negeri Sembilan has been diagnosed with diphtheria, the first adult case recorded in Malaysia.

According to a report by The New Straits Times‘ Beatrice Nita Jay, the 41-year-old woman reportedly came down with fever and complained of swollen tonsils and difficulty in swallowing on Monday.

Health director general Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah told the daily that she received treatment at the Rembau Health Clinic on July 13.

“She was suspected of having contracted diphtheria, and was then referred to the Tuanku Jaafar Hospital, where she was warded for isolation and treatment,” he was quoted as saying, adding that she was diagnosed with the disease on July 16.

She is reportedly in a stable condition.

Dr Noor Hisham told the NST that the case is considered to be an isolated one, and those who had been in contact with the patient have already received appropriate treatment.
