Victim in Setapak shooting bought a new car to avoid being followed: friend

A friend of the man who was shot dead in Setapak on Wednesday told Bernama that the victim had reportedly bought a new car to avoid being followed.

The friend, who wanted to stay anonymous, told the news agency that the victim previously drove a Toyota Camry.

“He bought a new Honda Accord just two weeks ago,” he was quoted by the news agency as saying.

In the 3.35pm incident, the victim – who operated a money changer business – was reportedly shot at 18 times by two gunmen on motorcycles at a traffic light intersection near Setapak Central.

Ten shots reportedly hit the father of three, who died at the scene.

Earlier, Inspector-General of Police Khalid Abu Bakar told The New Straits Times that the suspected gunmen are likely still in the country.

“They have nowhere to go. We will hunt them down. We have taken several additional measures but our borders are wide and porous,” Khalid was quoted by the daily as saying.
