Six Malaysians residing in Singapore confirmed with Zika

Six Malaysians residing or working in Singapore are confirmed to be infected with the Zika virus, according to a news report by The Star Online.

Malaysian Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr S. Subramaniam told the news portal that the information was provided by Singapore’s Ministry of Health.

The island has so far recorded a total of 115 Zika cases in the country, with seven nationalities affected.

A total of 23 Mainland Chinese contracted the disease, while 15 Indian nationals, 10 Bangladeshis and one individual each from Indonesia, Myanmar and Taiwan have reportedly been admitted to the hospital.

“All had mild illness. Most have recovered while the rest are recovering well,” Singapore’s Ministry of Health was quoted as saying in a statement cited by the news portal.

On Wednesday, Malaysia recorded its first Zika case after a 58-year-old woman from Bandar Botanic in Klang tested positive for the virus at the Sungai Buloh Hospital.

She had reportedly visited her daughter in Singapore on August 19 and began showing symptoms a week after the visit.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Najib Razak has advised Malaysians to take precautionary measures to combat the Zika threat via a posting on his official Facebook page:

“For the moment, everyone is advised to take precautionary measures and to follow the advice of the Health Ministry,” he said in the posting, adding that the government is currently closely monitoring the threat.
